This is a web partnership page, between Nickgenom.com and those built on trust, respect and open communication.
Yandex is a technology company that creates intelligent products and services powered by machine learning. Our goal is to help consumers and businesses better navigate the online and offline world. Since 1997, we have provided world-class, relevant and local information and search services. In addition, we have developed on-demand transportation services, navigation products and other market-leading mobile applications for millions of consumers worldwide. Yandex, which has 30 offices around the world, has been registered with the NASDAQ since 2011.
Yandex's history dates back to the early 1990s - long before the company was founded. Yandex as a company appeared in 2000, three years after the launch of the web portal yandex.ru. At that time there were only 25 names on the payroll of the new company and all the data that Yandex processed could fit on one server. Now Yandex has offices and representatives in ten countries, employs more than 12,000 people. In our home market, Russia, our share of all search traffic is 59.6% (Yandex.Radar, Q2 2020). We also operate in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Turkey.
Most of our revenue comes from contextual advertising, which serves ads for products and services based on what web users search for. Our Yandex.Direct service is the first and the largest system for the placement of text-based ads in Russia. In addition to serving ads on our own search results pages, we run advertisements on the thousands of third party websites that make up our Yandex Advertising Network.
Our company made a profit in 2002 and its revenue has been growing ever since. In May 2011, Yandex went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange, under the ticker YNDX.
Search engines today
Traditionally, the job of any search engine is to find information on the internet. But now that role has grown. The internet can no longer be seen in isolation from the reality around us, and search engines must now search all kinds of things, not only online but also in the offline world. And they don't just search and find them - they also provide useful advice in real-life situations. Contemporary search understands what each user wants, as well as the reality in which that user resides. That's why it can provide advice that fits everyone, individually - including what to read, where to go to eat, what music to listen to, how to get home as quickly as possible, where to book the cheapest flights, and more.
Search has always been and is still a core product of Yandex, but now we have a broader understanding of its role: as a universal help, assistant, guide for everything around us. It's about giving the right advice at the right place and time, helping make choices, and possibly getting things done.
All Yandex products are designed to make people's lives easier and better. Each one helps the user to do something that once seemed impossible. A few years ago we couldn't imagine reading a text in a foreign language without looking up every word in a dictionary, or having the address of the nearest pharmacy at our fingertips anywhere in the city, or taking a taxi without having to wait. Now, all of this is completely normal - all these accomplishments have become simple tasks that we take for granted.
That's what Yandex does - it creates services for people. Services with both, deep understanding of user interests and in-depth knowledge of user realities. A service that changes life as we know it and helps people achieve their goals.
The concept of 'user happiness' is very important to us. Among other things that means that how useful and user-friendly a product is is more important than how much money we can make from it. If a product or service that we make is liked by many people, then the business model will follow. Provided that the interests of the users are also taken into account.
Our work is based on a technological approach and statistical verification of all substantial changes to our products or services. Any changes must be objectively justified to help us understand whether they are actually of benefit to users.
World class technology
Yandex is a technology company. Our products and services are based on complex and unique technologies that are not easy to replicate. That's what allowed us to do things that used to sound like magic.
Practically all Yandex services use machine learning - including in ranking search results, serving online advertisements and performing translations. In 2009, Yandex developed and implemented its own machine learning method - MatrixNet.
Thanks to speech recognition technology, users can verbally communicate with the street navigation app Yandex.Navigator instead of manually typing in addresses. Users of our Yandex.Mail service can quickly find specific emails in their accounts - such as tickets, notification of appointments or meetings, information about discounts - all automatically flagged by our fact extraction technology. We use our own computer vision method to find similar images. In 2011, we launched a service for statistical machine translation - one of only three types currently in existence in the world.
Our technology and services run on tens of thousands of servers. We have Russia's largest network for data storage and processing. We share our data processing capacity with our partners who work in, among others, nuclear research and geological exploration.
Science and education
Our team of specialists represent many disciplines, including mathematics, data analysis, programming, linguistics and many others. In addition to working on products and technology at Yandex, some of our experts teach, lecture and train young students and specialists.
We run our own education program. The Yandex School of Data Analytics, which offers free courses for university graduates and senior students, has been running since 2007. The school trains specialists in internet data processing, data analysis and fact extraction. School graduates find jobs at Yandex and many other companies. Yandex also has a school for project managers, user interface developers and other IT specialists. We also partner with leading Russian universities and research centers, including the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the College of Economics. Yandex experts give lectures to high school students. We sponsor a number of school contests in the fields of computer programming, mathematics and linguistics.
Russia's largest technology conference, Yet another Conference, which Yandex hosts annually, brings together industry experts from around the world. We also hold scientific conferences on machine learning, as well as seminars, lectures, workshops and master classes for those who want or are already pursuing a career in the internet industry.
